Today's plans started out very simple. Go to Ikea, grab the few things we need, then run to the aquarium real fast in order to be home in time for naps by 2 at the VERY latest. That's not how things turned out. We did go to Ikea, and managed to get only a few things, most of which was intended in the first place. The most exciting unplanned item is some play food for Noah. He's currently 'making' me a salad. Then it was off to the aquarium...which was BUSY. The only other time I've seen the parking lot that full, we didn't bother to go because we knew it would be too much to deal with. Noah was dying to go though, so we went despite the crowds and the fact that Kaiden had only slept for about 10 minutes in the car. We didn't stay for very long though. There were so many people that we couldn't really see anything, and on the rare chance that Noah did get up next to the tanks to see something, another kid usually shoved him out of the way.
Needless to say, the aquarium trip was kind of a flop today. Noah was disappointed and tired, so I came up with a remedy for both. Take a really LONG drive home, and somehow involve the airport. So we drove up I-15, then headed west so that we could hopefully see a plane either coming in for a landing or just taking off. As luck would have it, we saw a plane just come in for a landing, but Noah was already asleep..... So I just kept driving on our very long detour home via Tooele.
Once again things didn't turn out how I was planning. I figured the boys would sleep the whole way home, or at least most of it, since they were both so stinking tired. Unfortunately my bladder decided to throw a kink into the works as well. I had to make a ridiculously fast stop at a maverick somewhere between I-80 and Tooele, which woke Noah up, which in turn woke Kaiden up before we even hit Tooele. So we changed up the plans once again and stopped at a McDonalds for some food and play time. After the boys got their fill of both, we then headed home. On this stretch of our random day-trip, both boys slept for an acceptable amount of time, and we finally got home around 3:30.
Interestingly enough I really enjoyed our little trip. I've been really antsy to go somewhere lately (which is why we're going to Idaho next weekend), and this helped satisfy that urge a little bit. It also gave me some fun time to think about how we're going to survive that trip, and I thought of some fun little day trips that we can take this summer as well: Salt flats, Bridal Veil, Sundance, Park City, Fairview. Fun outdoors places that the boys will be able to have fun, and they're close enough that we can just make a little day trip out of them.
